New – Photo Tutorial!

Cut out a single piece from thick polyester fleece (blizzard or anti-pill both work fine), and mark out the snap/elastic placement.
I like to turn the ends of the elastic over about 1/4″ when I sew it down. It makes it look neater, and it seems to be more durable this way.
Line up the end of the elastic with the elastic marking and slide under the presser foot.
Use a 3-step zig-zag stitch and backstitch a couple of times to secure the end of the elastic.
Now pull the elastic taut and stitch down the length. You may need to use one hand to guide the elastic through the machine.
Stop about 1/4″ away from the end elastic marking.
Cut the elastic, leaving about 1/2″.
Turn the end under.
Stitch over the end and backstitch a couple of times to secure.
Repeat process for all elastic.

Apply snaps (sockets on the wings facing out, studs on the front facing in).

For extra durability, you can use fleece scraps to reinforce the snaps. A small piece behind each snap, or a strip behind each row of snaps is sufficient.

You’re done!

  1. this was great.

    Thanks

  2. not sure if you answer question or not. could I also use this pattern to make an AIO diaper.

  3. Yes! In addition to covers, I’ve used this pattern to make AIOs, fitteds, and pockets! I’m afraid I don’t have any instructions for doing so, but the pattern outline works very well if you know the basics. If you look at this post, I used this pattern to make all three of those diapers. :)

  4. This was a very clear pattern and my covers turned out great! Thanks so much for sharing. :)

  5. this pattern is sooooo AWESOME and easy to use i am addicted thanks sooo much

  6. Is there a sizing chart for this cover. I would like to make a fitted diaper for my daughter with waist – 18, thighs – 11 and rise 16-18. Would SMALL fit her?

  7. Yes, I was wondering about a sizing chart as well…

  8. I was wondering about the elastic leaving marks on the baby? It seems it would be uncomfortable up against their skin? Have you had any issues with this in the past?

  9. I’ve never had any issues with it with my boys. I’ve found that the fleece is stretchy enough that they’ve never ended up being too tight anywhere. It might be an issue for sensitive skin – which neither of my boys has.

If you’re worried about the elastic, you can always do a double layer of fleece with the elastic in between either in a casing or a blind zig-zag. I’ve seen them turned and topstiched or just zig-zagged/serged around the edges.

  10. thank you for sharing, a question is, how to do this?…..
“If you’re worried about the elastic, you can always do a double layer of fleece with the elastic in between either in a casing or a blind zig-zag.” …. I can’t imagine how to sew the elastic without see it.

  11. What I do to zig-zag elastic in blind is make a casing out of pins. Basically, I’ll put in a row of pins with just enough space between the pin entry/exit points to thread the elastic in through them. That way the pins keep the elastic from moving from side to side, but I can still stretch it as I go. Then as long as I zig-zag down the part where the pins are covered in fabric in the middle, I know I’m sewing the elastic down too.

Does that make sense? It’s kind of hard to explain, maybe I’ll put up a brief pin-casing tutorial soon. :)

  12. Can I use PUL to make these covers?
